Fear & Loathing In The 21st Century

Recently, I’ve have been feeling rather less creative and productive than ever. My desire to shoot has diminished severely, and although my love for photography has not dimmed, the enjoyment I get from shooting has.

Why? Because there are so many horrible things in the world, so much hate and anger, and it seems half the people on social media at least, are more interested in X Factor, reality TV, and seemingly uninterested in the potential shit storm that is unravelling the world around them. White nationalists are parading around like self righteous erect cocks (and you can take the meaning of that to be either rooster or penis, it’s the same metaphor), British born Muslims and EU citizens living, working, and contributing to the UK are being harassed by the ill-educated bigots, fed a diet of fear and hatred by the right wing press (see ANY front page of the Daily Mail or Daily Express in the last 6 months. Hell, the last 6 years…)

In America, the threat of a man who has never held any political post, who is due trials for rape and fraud, who is the preferred candidate of the KKK, a sexist, racist, absolutely unsavoury character, could become the next President. His experience is reality TV (yep, that again), has given him the means to stir up the scared white folk with fear and hatred, spitting vitriolic lies, giving more ammunition to the right wing press.

Yesterday, the high court in the UK rules that Brexit (a word I despise) needs to be passed by parliament, and cannot be acted upon without this. The apoplectic white middle aged and middle class British reacted by calling for the murder of the lady who brought the action to the high court. Six months ago, Jo Cox, MP, was shot and killed by a white man who gave his name in court as ‘death to traitors, freedom for Britain’.

I fear we are heading in to times of almost civil war, we are heading back to a dark time, we are turning back the clocks to 50, to 100, to 200 years ago. We are better than that, we are supposed to be a civilised, intelligent race.

We live in a time of fear and hatred, and those who are not hiding themselves in the whimsical fantasy life of TOWIE and it’s spray tanned ilk, are deeply worried, and feeling deeply powerless to change things. The bigoted and very loud minority cannot be silenced, so confidently assured they are of their righteous cause. Y’see, the problem with stupid people is that they easily convinced themselves that they are right.

“Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.” - Albert Einstein

“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.” - Søren Kierkegaard

“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” - George Carlin

I could list quotes about stupid all day, from authors, politicians, philosophers, and comedians. But I digress from my original point.

I don’t want to hide away by creating what is essentially shallow art and photography, pretend none of the above is going on in the world. Oh yes, the best art derives itself from misery, you only need to read some of my own poetry to see that, but it doesn’t derive itself from fear and hatred. And it’s that fear and concern that removes my inspiration and motivation. I hate a cliche as much as anyone, but I don’t want to be rearranging deckchairs on the deck of the titanic. That's what it personally feels like to me, that my work is so shallow and meaningless, in a world that's turning to shit.

I'm sure some of you couldn't care less about my opinion, and would much rather see photos of semi naked women, or read my usual semi-comedic rants about every day rubbish. I apologise.
